SCHOOLS
Handbook
We hope to make your visit to the City Learning Centre as stress free as possible, and to ensure this we have listed all the information we think you may need. If there is anything that we have omitted then please let us know and we can add it to the list.
Accounts for Reception & Year 1
We have a generic account for primary students in Reception and Year 1 only. It is the CLC policy to actively encourage students to become familiar with their log-on details at an early age as this remains with them during their time at the CLC. The log-on account details will only be issued to the relevant teaching staff and it will be necessary to change this password from time to time.
Air Conditioning & Heating
An individual thermostat for both heating and air conditioning controls each suite. AC is operated by a remote-controlled handset available at reception, whilst heating switches can be found at the front of the rooms with thermostats on the walls. Please ensure that windows remain closed when the AC is in operation.
Bookings
To secure a booking at the CLC please complete the relevant booking form. These are available on line or by fax/post from the CLC. We also ask all visiting staff to submit a detailed lesson plan for audit and monitoring purposes. These lesson plans also provide exemplars for newly qualified practitioners.
CLC Software
We have a wide range of educational software available and a full current list is available from reception. The list also contains details of the number of licences available. It is recommended that teachers who wish to use a particular piece of software indicate this on their completed booking form, to avoid any delays during visits.
First Aid & Fire Evacuation
The CLC has two qualified members of staff capable of administering first aid. Please make reception aware of any students who may be at risk (e.g. epilepsy or diabetes). We also have a fully stocked first aid kit located in the technical office.
In the event of a fire please assemble on the CLC car park. The fire exits are all marked and can be found at the front (two exits) and the rear of the building. All CLC staff will act as marshals and drills will not be conducted without notification.
Logging-On
To log-on to the CLC network requires a username and password. These are created by the CLC staff prior to your visit. Once you have submitted the full name and date of birth for those who require access this can be done. We do ask for five days notice for groups, as this is a time consuming process. The CLC accounts have an automatic lockout and after three incorrect attempts to log-on the account will require CLC staff intervention
PA System
Each suite is fitted with speakers for the centres PA system. Music can be piped into each room and the volume controlled in each area. We have a range of CDs available or you can bring along your own. Some software in the CLC requires the use of headphones. These can be requested at reception and we ask that they are returned in the same condition as borrowed.
Portable Disks and CD ROMs
Unless specified students will not have access to open floppy or portable pen drives. This is to ensure that the network remains free from viruses. Please submit any files you require to technical support for checking and installation.
We cannot allow copy or pirate CDs or DVDs on the CLC network. This is in line with software licensing rules and we would appreciate your support in ensuring this.
Printing
All suites have a colour printer, capable of high demand printing. The CLC operates a printing credit system and A4 is 30p per sheet, regardless of colour. Credits are issued at reception and teachers are advised to make CLC staff aware of requirements – e.g. number of anticipated sheets per visit. Printing is monitored by staff and students will be asked to pay for non-school related work. Paper is provided by the CLC.
Projectors and Interactive Whiteboards
Each CLC suite is equipped with a Promethean Board and Sanyo projector. We also have the latest version of Activ Studio Primary and Secondary, together with Boardworks. These boards come with a stylus and slate, which allows teachers to activate the Boards from a distance. Each room has a dry-wipe board, which is the only board that can be written on. All stylus pens and dry-wipe equipment is available from reception. Teachers will need to sign out stylus pens. The workstation that operates the whiteboard is appropriately marked.
Reprographics and Recycling
The CLC has a reprographics unit capable of A3, A4, laminating and binding facilities. We can also do bulk photocopying – prices available from reception
Risk Assessment
We have in place a current risk assessment, which includes the CLC grounds. As transport is operated by an external organisation they are not included on the risk assessment. Copies of the documents are available on request.
Technical Support
Classes using the CLC should have a technical trouble-free visit. There may be occasion when a problem arises due to hardware, software or the Internet (predominantly outside of our control). The CLC will endeavour to resolve this as quickly as possible and keep the attending staff informed of progress. We do have wireless kit available for students to use in the event of workstation failure.
Telephones
The use of mobile telephones is not permitted in the CLC suites. They can disrupt wireless communications and occasionally have damaged data held on hard drives. In the interest of safety and for the courtesy of other users please refrain from using in teaching areas, The CLC does not have a public telephone.
Transport
The CLC can facilitate and contribute towards transport costs for groups to and from the CLC.
